Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga with poses, or asanas, that are held for longer periods of time. This style of yoga targets the deep connective tissues of the body (vs. the superficial tissues) and the fascia that covers the body. Muscles account for about forty percent of the resistance against the body’s flexibility, while connective tissue accounts for about fifty percent. Participants will reap the physical benefits of increased flexibility through more passive postures, mainly on the floor. It is not uncommon to see postures held for three to five minutes.
Like all styles of yoga, Yin Yoga has both mental and physical benefits and is appropriate for all levels.
